The industry of industrial limbs in Yemen has flourished in the past two years ,as the number of the war victims increased, especially those with various disabilities in their bodies.

The industry arose as a response to the outcome of the war in areas where armed confrontations, mines planted by the Houthi militias, or random shelling were taking place.

There are three industrial limbs centers in Yemen, one in Taiz ,one in Aden, and the third was established recently in the province of Marib, these are the cities that lived the hell of the war and were subjected to shelling and armed confrontations, which are still continuing, except in Aden, where the military situation is calm in these days.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) estimates that there are 7,000 disabled people in Yemen within two years, while the General Federation of the Disabled people has documented 2,647 cases.

The tragedy was compounded by the inability of the Sana'a Disabled Welfare Fund to provide services after the Houthi militia reduced its budget from six billion to less than two billion a year.

Manufacturing limbs in Marib

In the province of Marib, east of Yemen, the industry of the limbs has been widespreaded recently, due to the battles and confrontations of the national army on the one hand, and the coup forces of the Houthi militias and their allies on the other hand about two years ago.

A soldier named Ahmed ,25 years old said"I waited more than a year for this foot, and I could not stay in the wounded quarters during my break from the war".

"I lost my feet in the front of Sarwah, and today I will return to the front after the installation of this industrial foot," Ahmed added enthusiastically.

Installation of industrial limbs

The head of the center of the limbs industry at Marib Hospital, Haitham Ahmed Ali (Sudani) says that he met many disabled such as "Ahmed".

He confirms to "Almawqea post" that the process of installation of an artificial limb goes along four stages after four complete months from the date of amputation, where the first stage starts by inspection and examination of the situation, then wait for the wound, examine the extent of acceptance of the installation of the part,or try to make it suitable for the industrial limb.

After that the stage of measurement of the remaining part and the length of the person to manufacture a part suitable with the length of the person and his size and the size of the part,so that everything becomes appropriate.

Then comes the stage of installation and training the psychological situation, to acclimatize as a natural person using this industrial part to exercise natural movements in a place devoted to this trainning under the supervision of a Syrian expert.

Dr. Haitham Ahmed pointed out that the center should only receive statements, names and data coming from the management of the wounded.

Local industry parts

According to the specialists of the center, it was created for two purposes, the first installing artificial limbs, and the second training Yemeni staff for the manufacture and installation of artificial limbs.

"The main objective of our presence here is to train a Yemeni staff specialized in the manufacture and installation of alternative limbs, which we consider to be the fingerprint of Doctors without Borders Organization in Yemen," said Haitham Ahmed, the director of the center.

Haitham confirmed that this goal has succeeded and trained six Yemenis, and are now working successfully under the supervision of six experts from Turkey, Syria and Sudan, he said.

He said that the Yemeni trainee (technician) delivers or installs three parts a week, while an organization member (expert) produced or installs 15 parts a week. This was considered by the director of the center a great success in understanding the work by the trainees.

The Director of the Center for Alternative Parts Haytham said that the support of the Center is funded by the organization supported by a number of European and Arab countries and Turkey, which provided the organization "Doctors across continents - Turkey," and he confirms that the King Salman Center contributes to this by facilitating the crossing of the needs of the Center and the staff of the Organization from Saudi Arabia to Yemen.

Dozens are waiting

"I have waited more than two years to install an industrial leg after carrying this stick since 2014," says one of the wounded.

The 26-year-old feels pain when he remembers the future. "I would like to walk like that," he said, pointing to a young man walking in the street.

Beside Yusuf, there are nearly 900 people in Marib are waiting to return to their normal life in the community by installing prosthetic prostheses for their limbs, most of them have  lost by landmine, projectile and rocket explosions, according to the director of the Alternative parts Center in Marib.

Dr. Haitham Ahmed Ali, said to"Almawqea post" that there is a list of many names waiting for the installation of alternative limbs ranging from the feet and knees and legs, 600 are currently in the  wounded apartment , and the rest registered their names in different places.

He also said "The center has been fulfilling the needs of the disabled people since 2014, and we still have people who lost their limbs in 2015".

According to Haitham, the increase in the number of applicants for alternative parts has made the organization (Intercontinental Doctors - Turkey) extend the duration of its work and sign a new agreement with the Yemeni government and Marib General Hospital to complete the needs of all cases.

"We bear the consequences of four years of war, which only resulted in the wound, disable and death of people" he said.

New agreement

Haitham said that "the Organization of Doctors across continents in Turkey agreed the request the manufacturing and installation of 1000 additional parts as a second stage, and we will work on it in the next few days."

And reveals that the first phase was the manufacture and installation of 300 parts within 4 months, which the Center could not implement until now, because of the Center is busy training a Yemeni staff for the manufacture and installation of artificial limbs locally.

He explained that what has been installed so far is 73 industrial parts, and the amendment of 37 industrial parts, in addition to the amendment of some parts to those who carried out installation outside the center, both within the capital Sana'a, or in other countries.

Obstacles

The Director of the Center of the Artificial Limits considers that the most important obstacle faced by the Center is the delay of importing raw materials from outside Yemen or bringing in or replacing the members of the Organization. He explained that the security operation is not coordinated due to the lack of coordination between the liberated areas from which the wounded come with the National Army.

Disabled Female

"Fatima" is one of three females whose names are listed in the lists of prostheses that have been fitted in the same position, and three others are on the waiting list to install various prostheses in their bodies.

According to the center's data, all cases of women caused by mines planted by Houthi and Saleh forces which caused the cut of their limbs as they passed through the roads after the forces left.

Taiz and Aden centers

The industrial centers in Taiz and Aden are relatively old centers in Yemen, but the need for their services has recently increased significantly, and the center covers the cities in which they are located in addition to the neighboring governorates.

The majority of those working in these centers receive low wages, complaining of government laziness, poor financial budgets, lack of equipment and the modernization they need to provide services and machines to meet the growing numbers, and compensate the victims for what they have lost.

In Aden, some of the workers in the center of the artificial limbs are those with the former needs, who suffered from disabilities in one of their members, and earn some ten thousand riyals a month (less than fifty dollars), a small amount compared to the situation experienced by the employee and the job done.
